About us.

Bain physiotherapy is made up of my Wife and I - Kevin and Emma Bain. Both Emma and I are physiotherapists who specialise in different clinical areas.

I have spent much of my career in professional sport and currently hold the position of Head of Medical and Football Science at a Scottish Premier League football club.

Emma has spent seven years working for the National Health Service, doing remarkable work as a specialist in rehabilitation. While our patient demographic is different, we believe that the breadth of experience we have gained in different clinical areas has resulted in us holding similar core values.

We want to provide a straightforward and coherent approach to physiotherapy, believing that simple things should be done well consistently. We believe this will result in our ultimate goal; driving change in a positive and logical way.

It all starts with an idea

‘Boot-it’ originated from a clinical problem I was presented with around two years ago. The patient had sustained an AiTFL injury, which required surgical fixation. Faced with a minimum of nine weeks rehabilitation (four to six of these in a cast) during a pivotal stage in their career.

One of my goals while working with this patient, was to find a way of maintaining his V02 max, without disrupting the rehabilitation process. Initially, I undertook a search of the online market to find a cycling aid for a walking cast. However, I was unsuccessful in finding anything that met this description.

With simplicity at the forefront of my mind and with nothing more than a sheet of low temperature thermoplastic, a bath of hot water and a pair of scissors, I set off with one objective in mind, to build a simple interface adaptor that allowed an athlete to perform safe static cycling.

The initial design was effective in allowing the athlete to engage in daily static cycling activity while wearing the walking cast. However, it quickly became clear that the low temperature thermoplastic was sub-optimal, due to its moderate flexibility and limited capacity to cope with repeated high wattage efforts.

Both Emma and I concluded that while the concept was sound, there were a few alterations to be made before the product was ready. Now, after months of testing and adaptations, we are proud to bring you our final product.

We firmly believe that ‘Boot-it’ is a unique product that allows people from all walks of life to safely engage in rehabilitation without risk of further injury. By making it universally accessible to all, ‘Boot-it’ simplifies the rehabilitation process and drives positive outcomes.

Design.

After being granted the design rights for the initial prototype, we were keen to refine the design and choose an appropriate manufacturing material, one which could cope with the high forces applied by everyone from professional athletes to elderly patients recovering from foot and ankle injuries. The development of ‘Boot-it’ happened in partnership with two local design companies here in the north east of Scotland. Both Emma and I were passionate about having the product designed and manufactured locally.

Final modifications were made after extensive trials with elite athletes, to further refine the functionality and adaptability.

After a robust design process, we now have what we believe to be the only safe and effective device on the market to allow for static cycling in a walking cast.

Boot-it.

Boot-it is interchangeable to accommodate patients with left and right sided injuries using an original slotted design on the sole plate.

The Boot-it device is compatible with both SPD and LOOK KEO cleats.
